Paul Fox and Apache Indian share the Same Blood

Two legends of reggae music collaborate for the first time on a song about their common humanity

Veteran UK roots reggae singer Paul Fox and legendary UK dancehall deejay Apache Indian have joined forces for the song Same Blood. The title track from Fox’s current album, Same Blood is a call for unity in these fragmented times, reminding us that inside, we are all one.

Both artists had been aware of each other’s work since they came to attention in the 1990s. They first suggested a collaboration back in 1993 when Fox interviewed Apache for a cable TV channel. A link up on Instagram nearly twenty years later resulted in the recording of Same Blood – featuring backing vocals from Paul’s wife, Helen Fox.

“The lyrics are about the fact that we are all Homo Sapiens” says Fox “and there are no more specific scientific classifications of life below the species level… meaning we really are all the same blood.”

“I first heard Paul’s music over 20 years ago and always wanted to work with him” says Apache “Nothing comes before the time. Just the title alone ‘Same Blood’ says so much, it didn’t need much explaining for me to start writing my parts. This will always be one of the songs on my playlist because of its simplicity, its depth and its meaning.”

Born in Handsworth, Birmingham, Apache Indian has been active in reggae music since the early 1980s. He found fame as a dancehall deejay in 1993 with the hit song Boom Shack-A-Lak written for the iconic soundtrack to Dumb & Dumber reaching number 5 in the UK singles chart.  This year Apache Indian performed at the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony alongside Dexys Midnight Runners, Jaykae, Musical Youth and UB40.

Inspired by the 80s UK roots reggae sound system revival led by Jah Shaka, Paul Fox cut his first tunes in the early 90s on his own Sound Business label, produced by Nick Manasseh. He has since collaborated with revered reggae artists including Jonah Dan, Michael Rose, Rod Taylor, Brother Culture, Dubheart, and Alpha & Omega.

Same Blood is accompanied by its haunting flipside We Got The Same Dub – which appears on the companion album Dub Blood.

Beneil Miller – Sailing In Love (Acoustic Version)

  • Release Date 14th Feb 2022

A friend in Boston proposed “a project while I was still at Berklee and asked if I had any originals… the song itself, ‘Sailing In Love’, is seven or eight years old” and the inspiration came from one of Cayman’s beautiful seaside idylls.

“I don’t know how to describe it… it’s not even a beach just rocks that have been there for millions of years. I was out there and the whole chorus came to me. But it’s a combination of people contributing over the years … different players… different places.”

Beneil Miller’s music transcends categorisation and transports us all to kinder, calmer places… and there’s much more to follow.

“But this is the first of many songs! I intend to do some more singles and a full length album by the end of the year.”

That’s definitely something we can all look forward to…

An enchanting mbira line summons ancestral forces on the new collaboration by Ma1co1m & Kibir La Amlak – Fi Di Kingdom

MA1CO1M x KIBIR LA AMLAK – FI DI KINGDOM

Before Zero Records

4 Track Digital EP with instrumental & dubs

Release: 11 February 2022

Stream: https://ffm.to/fidikingdom

Ma1co1m, a young member of the RasTafari faith, is an artist difficult to categorise. His maternal heritage Ugandan, his paternal Norwegian and he himself currently residing in Stockholm, Sweden. Ma1co1m hails from a new generation of RasTafari musicians, who, although rooted in the ancient foundation of RasTafari reggae and inspired by the greats from Bob to Bunny to Prince Fari, his principal musical inspiration comes from the works of Vaughn Benjamin, aka Akae Beka / the voice of Midnite. It therefore goes without saying that Ma1co1m’s lyrical content is heavily steeped in mysticism, with an often ethereal quality, somewhere between prayer and poetry.  90’s born and raised against the backdrop of millennial culture, Ma1co1m has long followed a calling away from the virtues of the modern world and rooted himself in permaculture projects in Uganda, plant medicine and a keen advocate of sports, athleticism and fitness. Ma1co1m is an artist with a mission and a vision, in the divine inspiration of Haile Selassie I, ‘to become a member of a new race’.

Fi Di Kingdom, is the first of many collaborations between Ma1co1m and London based producer and sound system, Kibir La Amlak. A track that was allowed to become exactly what ‘it’ wanted to be, the riddim was built on a Friday, vocals recorded on Saturday and video shot on Sunday. Just as with Ma1co1m as an artist, one will struggle to accurately confine this track to a specific genre, it’s definitely dub, but also hip-hop and trap, its slow in tempo but in places feels fast paced, its electronic and acoustic, yet one thing which is undeniable is its heavy and deep. An enchanting mbira line summons ancestral forces, the nyahbingi drum sanctifies the ceremonial proceedings and the drum and bass roots the track like a tree well planted by a river of water, providing the perfect tapestry for Ma1co1m to deliver a combination of poetic, prayerful, chanting, rapping, singing, militant yet gentle word sound and power.

The brand new video for “Free Your Mind” is live on Macka B‘s YouTube channel.

Directed by Akil Designs, the video encourages us to incorporate the Freedom of Nature into our mindset.

As always with Macka B, it is a crucial message at a crucial time.

UK Reggae legend Macka B released his single “Free your Mind” on 5 November 2021an acoustic remake of the Joe Higgs classic “Let Us Do Something/Journey To Freedom”.  Joe Higgs is credited as the man who taught Bob Marley and the Wailers to sing.

Free your mind is a beautiful acoustic reggae track featuring Ciyo Brown one of the UK’s finest guitarists. The melodic and harmonious nature of the track reflects Ciyo’s many musical influences.

Macka B is renowned for his positive, uplifting lyrics and “Free your Mind” is no exception. In his unique poetic style, he effortlessly glides across the track with a heart rendering plea encouraging the listener to look within, free your mind and take the shackles and chains from your brains.  The haunting chorus of freedom perfectly complements the acoustic vibes with harmonies courtesy of Peter Spence and Noel Browne.

“Free your Mind” comes at a perfect time when people are searching for answers to what is going on in the world today.

A must for your collection; music with a message.
