For EPMmusic’s 100th release we’re throwing it back to another milestone. Last year, EPM celebrated 20 years in the business of Digital Distribution and Rights Management with a series of vinyl EPs and a compilation on our in-house label. Now we’ve enlisted Shed, CYRK, Inigo Kennedy and Works of Intent – all artists who we’ve had the pleasure to work with in the last 2 decades – to remix some of those ‘EPM20’ tracks.

On the A-side, the highly acclaimed and always uncompromising Shed (one of the many aliases of Berlin’s René Pawlowitz) delivers a raw and tribal take on Regis ‘Beyond The Reach Of Time’. From one legend to a current Electro phenomenon CYRK, fresh off the back of their collaborative ‘Freundschaft’ album on Burial Soil turn their hand to Freddie Fresh’s ‘ProMars’ adding their own style of tuff ‘lectro funk.

Flip over for one of the UK’s Techno warriors, Inigo Kennedy, as the Asymmetric man goes all out on his ominously epic and bass laden remix of ‘Io’ by Bryan Chapman. To close the EP is UK electronic artist and DJ, Works of Intent (f.k.a. R.O.S.H) with a twisted remix of Paul Mac’s ‘Nothing Remains’ bringing in elements of rave, breaks and sci fi sonics.

Shuffle Rush

  • Artist(s) Oliver Way
  • Composer(s) Oliver Way
  • Label V-Series / EPMmusic
  • Publisher(s) EPM
  • Release Date 12th Aug 2022

EPM launches a new subsidiary label under the banner of “V-Series”, standing for Vintage: a golden era of Techno in the 90s and early 2000s before the digital era took over. As we dig in the vaults for over-looked gems and hidden classics, we remaster releases from this time that have previously only been available on vinyl, bringing them into the digital age.

The first EP in the series is the ‘Chicago Connex EP’ which was originally released on Oliver Way’s Morpheus Productions back in 2000 with Robert Armani (Dance Mania / ACV / Traxman) and fellow Chicago producer Lester Fitzpatrick (Relief / Naked Lunch / Urban Kickz).

Lester Fitzpatrick launches with a steam train of a kick drum that spins off into a disorientating sweat soaked vortex of off-kilter, industrial Chi-town jack for a truly unique roof-raiser!

Robert Armani follows with his classic signature sound of distorted Chicago drums and minimal twisted beats, as the snare rides through twisted filtered frequencies for the dancefloor journey that is ‘Object’.

The EP is then rounded off by two of Oliver Way’s own Chicago influenced productions – ‘Notorious’ which was originally released under the pseudonym Morpheus Productions, takes part of an Armani answer machine message and adds that distinctive hard Chicago Techno sound.  Oliver’s second track ‘Shuffle Rush’ was originally released on ‘Electronic Sockets Pt 3’ in 1999 via Urban Substance that Oliver ran with Dublin promoter JDP and brings a more linear minimal techno feel to this Windy City embracing release.

Alone Together

  • Artist(s) Komo B
  • Composer(s) Bruno Bours
  • Label EPMmusic
  • Publisher(s) EPM
  • Release Date 24th Jun 2022

EPM’s 99th release looks to the future with a debut release for Komo B. Spinning records since 2004 Komo B (Bruno Bours, Maastricht) has an eclectic style between disco, house, acid and techno with some electric motor soul. In general, his spiritual feeling reflects in his love for Detroit techno and (spiritual) jazz and improvisation. Musical influences come from the USA (Detroit, Chicago, New York) and F Communications, Peacefrog, Versatile, R&S, Warp, Rephlex, Tresor and Dutch labels like Delsin, Djax, Clone and The Hague sound (Bunker, Crème Organization, Intergalactic FM). The first track ‘Orbit’ is inspired by the idea that we as humans are floating around in space and takes off with classic Detroit-inspired chords. Then ‘Birds Flying High’’ symbolises freedom and takes the EP into a long, building deeper techno realm before closing track ‘Alone Together’ is a more melancholic track reflecting on the time we were in during the pandemic.

Rebuild

  • Artist(s) Ballet Mechanique
  • Composer(s) Jeroen Borrenbergs
  • Label EPMmusic
  • Publisher(s) EPM
  • Release Date 13th May 2022

Ballet Mechanique is the musical outlet of Jeroen Borrenbergs, co-founder of design studio Stoere Binken Design. In 1996 he made his debut on Eindhoven’s first electronic music label, Stefan Robber’s Eevo Lute Muzique and became the label’s in-house graphic designer from 1995 until 2003.

Having more recently released two re-issue EPs on Amsterdam’s highly respected Delsin Records and a series of 90s made yet unreleased material on Spanish re-issue label O.C.D. (Open Channel for Dreamers) ‘Rebuild’ marks the first brand new material from the Dutch producer and designer for many years.

As a man who was initially inspired to produce by the likes of The Black Dog, Future Sound of London, Global Communication and old school Detroit techno the ‘Rebuild EP’ continues the dance / cerebral lineage with two “floor” cuts and two more “listening” tracks.

‘Rebuild’ starts the proceedings with a driving tempo that builds around emotional strings for a taste of classic Detroit inspired techno-funk. ‘Echo Catcher’ then showcases Jeroen’s more introspective side – echoing indeed the legacy of early Black Dog. ‘Share the Feeling’ then picks things up again, highlighting Jeroen’s mastery of a building dancefloor narrative that knows when to give and let go whilst closing track ‘Big Hearts’ is a wonderful, ethereal, sun-kissed cyber-kinetic daydream. Glorious stuff!

  • Release Date 4th Mar 2022

Following Theiz’s ‘Waiting On Closure’, is a unique EP by South East London’s Busby who makes his EPMmusic debut with ‘Behind The Mask EP’.

Busby is an artist that tries to not fit into any specific box, utilising his traditional musical training in tandem with his electronic music obsession to create dancefloor sounds that attempt to adhere to as many tastes as possible. From industrial techno to spacey synth-pop and from complex polyrhythms to catchy melodies. He currently runs AJ’s Dance Party, a grass-roots community based in South London which celebrates local DJ talent, with small events in and around South East London (most recently at Four Quarters in Peckham) alongside a monthly radio show on Komrad Radio. He is also a freelance journalist who has written pieces for the likes of The Ransom Note and Loose Lips and as a producer is currently working on music for an independent video game project.

For his ‘Behind The Mask EP’ he delivers three tracks, opening with the quirky tech-funk of ‘Barking Up The Wrong Tree’, before the spatial ‘Nils on Pills’ and title track closer ‘Behind The Mask’ which add a touch of breakbeat to the proceedings.

Theiz – A Quiet Warm Sense

  • Artist(s) Theiz
  • Composer(s) Mathijs Schippers
  • Label EPMmusic
  • Publisher(s) EPM
  • Release Date 4th Feb 2022

EPMmusic kick starts 2022 with a new EP from Theiz. Following his ‘Moving Forward into the Past’ EP from the end of 2020, ‘Waiting on Closure’ delivers 4 cuts of classic electronica, tempered with techno steel and a bonus remix from East Island.

Theiz, real name Mathijs Schippers has released on labels such as Eevolute, Techno-Tourist and Ear-land Recordings in the late ’90s and early ’00s and began producing again in 2015 after a 15-year break.

With a set of influences that range from Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, FSOL and Plastikman to Phillip Glass, Theiz’s ‘Waiting on Closure’ fuses modern techno to classic electronica. Taking us back to an early ’90s techno blueprint and then updated with modern production techniques we find an artist fusing funk and warmth with a forlorn emotional depth.

Eevolute, Downlow, Ear-land and EevoNext artist, East Island provides a bumping, acidic remix of ‘We’ll Find A Way’ to round off another quality EP from Theiz.

Wrapping up our 20th year in fine style EPM are delighted to reveal the release of ‘Beyond the Reach of Time’, the surprise 4th instalment of our EPM20 vinyl series from UK techno master, Regis.

Karl O’Connor (aka Regis) has remained a maverick and iconic figure on the global techno stage, ever since his ‘Montreal’ EP burned his name across the world’s dancefloors some 25 years ago. His unconventional and single-minded label, Downwards, often shrouded by mythology, has also helped to launch fellow protagonist Surgeon as one of techno’s most revered DJ/producers.

Never one to tread the easy path, O’Connor alongside known projects such as British Murder Boys (with Surgeon), O/V/R with James Ruskin and Sandwell District alongside Function and Silent Servant has more recently collaborated with artists such as Ann Margaret Hogan (piano) and Justin K. Broadrick on guitar (previously of Godflesh) for a one-off concert performed live in the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, Argolis, Greece as well as releasing last year’s stunning new album ‘In This Is The Light That You Miss’ on Downwards. In his continuous search to side-step convention, he remains one of the more highly regarded creative forces within the British techno/electronic scene.

The genesis of the tracks on ‘Beyond the Reach of Time’ go way back to 1999 and thanks to various internet leaks have, over the following years, added to the mystique that surrounds them and the artist. Recorded in a period when O’Connor was putting tracks together for both an album on Tresor and an anonymous shortly-lived house label called Housework, these tracks seemed to fit neither the hard-edged Regis sound of the time nor the Housework style and simply slipped through the cracks.

Now over 20 years after their creation we are proud to give these long-lost Regis tracks the official release they deserve. The EP opens with the thumping yet muted tribalism of ‘No Love From Above’ whereby O’Connor approaches the dancefloor with malevolent restraint before ‘At the Side of Silence’ fuses this approach with the chord motif that runs through the beating heart of this release.

Rolling in at just under 13 minutes the closing ‘Beyond the Reach of Time Pt.2’ is epic in both scale and sound, its synth drenched chords taking it closer to Motor City emotionalism than anything O’Connor has committed to wax. Its sister piece ‘Beyond the Reach of Time Pt.1’ can also be found on ‘EPM20’, the 21-track digital compilation marking EPM’s 20th Year.
