Respects paid to Jamal Edwards after SBTV founder passes, aged 31

Edwards MBE was a YouTube pioneer who went on to become one of music's leading tastemakers and a respected accelerator of emerging talent.

Tributes to Jamal Edwards have flooded social media following the news that the SBTV founder and media entrepreneur passed away suddenly yesterday, at the age of 31.

Edwards was a YouTube pioneer, with his SBTV channel being an early example of grassroots, music discovery online, launching the careers of many artists and leading a surge of popularity in UK rap music in particular.

He went on to become one of music’s leading tastemakers and a respected accelerator of emerging talent, and was awarded an MBE in 2014.

In a statement, Edwards’ mother, singer and presenter Brenda Edwards, confirmed he passed after a short illness. She paid tribute to her son, calling him an inspiration to so many, adding, “Our love for him lives on, his legacy lives on.”

Artists and industry figures from the music business and beyond took to social media to pay their respects to Edwards.
