London, 26th July 2021 Metropolis Studios, Europe’s leading independent recording studio, has opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art 3D audio recording facility at the heart of its sprawling West London complex. Coinciding with the launch, Amazon Music has agreed a content deal with the studio, which will become the streaming services’ UK-based HQ for immersive mixing, strengthening their offering to artists.
The new studio, which is now open, will enable established and emerging artists to unlock the exciting potential of 3D audio. Continuing the site’s legacy of technological innovation, from its construction in 1900 to house the London Tram System to the present day where Metropolis’ industry-leading recording studio now stands, the studio will also be open to a broad range of arts organisations.
Unlocking the creative opportunities of Metropolis’ new studio, the arts sector will have access to a variety of possibilities. From finding partners for live streamed concerts and mixing 3D audio for theatre shows to working with TV and film production companies on enhancing new and catalogue audio recordings, the impressive scope of the studio’s technological capabilities will provide the arts with a wealth of creative opportunities.
Upcoming immersive mixes from the studio’s first content partnership, with Amazon Music, include The Amazons, Emma McGrath, Dumbfounded, James Reid and Jules Aurora.
Amazon Music already provides customers access to high quality streaming audio, with Amazon Music Unlimited offering it’s listeners over 75 million songs in HD and 7 million tracks in Ultra HD, with a growing catalogue of songs mixed in 3D Audio formats including Dolby Atmos and Sony 360RA. The partnership between Metropolis Studios and Amazon Music demonstrates a continued investment in immersive sound and their expanding offering to artists, with the first mixes becoming available to listeners this summer.
Metropolis has also teamed up with immersive content experts Sonosphere on the design and specification of the new studio and to support its creative mix workflow. With the room’s benchmark in cutting-edge technology and connectivity, Sonosphere will help pioneer the production and delivery of spatial audio. Built using nearly two tons of sand to isolate the studio, the control room pursues an ambitious and flexible ‘hub studio’ approach, enabling freedom from dependence on any particular mix hardware so that those using the studio can bring their own mixing console. With all the loudspeakers around the room arrayed at 30° of separation to each other, the new studio’s comprehensive immersive audio monitoring is designed to cater for all surround formats, including Dolby Atmos.
Sonosphere mix engineer Phil Wright, whose credits include Paul McCartney, Brian May and Benny Andersson, will work with Metropolis’ all-star team of highly skilled mastering engineers, Tony Cousins, Matt Colton, John Davies and Stuart Hawkes, ensuring the utmost quality control with their unmatched collective expertise.
